HRCI Announces New Certification Eligibility Requirements

In keeping with best practices for certification programs, the HR Certification Institute (HRCI) recently conducted an extensive study of the current PHR/SPHR/GPHR eligibility requirements.  Based on feedback from both certified and non-certified HR professionals, business leaders, students and academicians, the requirements will not include a combination of education and experience.  The changes will go into effect in the May – June 2011 testing window.   The table below outlines the new requirements:

PHR Eligibility

SPHR Eligibility

GPHR Eligibility

4 years of demonstrated exempt-level HR experience with less than a Bachelor’s degree

2 years of demonstrated exempt-level HR experience with a Bachelor’s degree

1 year demonstrated exempt-level HR experience with a Master’s degree or higher

7 years of demonstrated exempt-level HR experience with less than a Bachelor’s degree

5 years of demonstrated exempt-level HR experience with a Bachelor’s degree

4 year demonstrated exempt-level HR experience with a Master’s degree or higher

4 years of demonstrated exempt-level HR experience(with 2 of the 4 being global HR experience) with less than a Bachelor’s degree

3 years of demonstrated exempt-level HR experience (with 2 of the 3 being global HR experience) with a Bachelor’s degree

2 year demonstrated global exempt-level HR experience with a Master’s degree or higher

Current eligibility only requires documented two years of exempt-level (professional) HR work experience.  The new requirement of “demonstrated exempt-level” experience should open the certification to a wider audience regardless of a candidates exempt vs. non-exempt status.  Test candidates most affected by the new requirements will be prospective SPHR and GPHR candidates who would be eligible under the current requirements but will now only be eligible to take the PHR exam.

Additionally, students will no longer be eligible to take the exams without the required work experience.  Students will be able to take the exam once they have graduated and achieved the required number of years of demonstrated work experience that is required for the certification they wish to achieve and the degree they hold.  HRCI will begin working with students and universities to help prepare students for the “HR Essentials” certification program.

The new eligibility requirements will begin with the spring 2011 testing window and will affect any examinee testing for certification, including candidates who are recertifying by exam.  HRCI believes the new eligibility requirements will result in better alignment with the candidate profile that possesses the level of practical experience and HR knowledge to perform successfully on the exam.
